30 Websites To Visit If You Want To Be a Better Web Designer

Opening words

Better web designer. Making, building, and maintaining a website or blog, the design is one of the most important. And without good design skills, your website or blog will look bad and not pleasing to the eye.

In this article, I will refer to 30 websites that you have to visit if you want to become a more established and better web designer.

As always, I will not comment on the website listed. I will let them introduce themselves to you. Happy reading.

What is Web Design?

From Treefrog.ca

The design is the process of collecting ideas, and aesthetically arranging and implementing them, guided by certain principles for a specific purpose.

Web design is a similar process of creation, with the intention of presenting the content on electronic web pages, which the end-users can access through the internet with the help of a web browser.

Elements of Web Design

Web design uses many of the same key visual elements as all types of design such as:

Layout: This is the way the graphics, ads, and text are arranged. In the web world, a key goal is to help the view find the information they seek at a glance. This includes maintaining the balance, consistency, and integrity of the design.

Colour: The choice of colors depends on the purpose and clientele; it could be simple black-and-white to multi-colored design, conveying the personality of a person or the brand of an organization, using web-safe colors.

Graphics: Graphics can include logos, photos, clipart or icons, all of which enhance the web design. For user-friendliness, these need to be placed appropriately, working with the color and content of the web page, while not making it too congested or slow to load.

Fonts:  The use of various fonts can enhance website design. Most web browsers can only read a select number of fonts, known as “web-safe fonts”, so your designer will generally work within this widely accepted group.

Content: Content and design can work together to enhance the message of the site through visuals and text.

Written text should always be relevant and useful, so as not to confuse the reader and to give them what they want so they will remain on the site.

Content should be optimized for search engines and be of a suitable length, incorporating relevant keywords.

From Interaction-design.org

Web design refers to the design of websites that are displayed on the internet. It usually refers to the user experience aspects of website development rather than software development.

Web design used to be focused on designing websites for desktop browsers; however, since the mid-2010s, design for mobile and tablet browsers has become ever-increasingly important.

A web designer works on the appearance, layout, and, in some cases, content of a website. Appearance, for instance, relates to the colors, font, and images used. Layout refers to how information is structured and categorized.

Good web design is easy to use, aesthetically pleasing and suits the user group and brand of the website. Many webpages are designed with a focus on simplicity so that no extraneous information and functionality that might distract or confuse users appears.

As the keystone of a web designer’s output is a site that wins and fosters the trust of the target audience, removing as many potential points of user frustration as possible is a critical consideration.

Two of the most common methods for designing websites that work well both on desktop and mobile are responsive and adaptive design.

In responsive design, content moves dynamically depending on screen size; in adaptive design, the website content is fixed in layout sizes that match common screen sizes.

Preserving a layout that is as consistent as possible between devices is crucial to maintaining user trust and engagement. As responsive design can present difficulties in this regard, designers must be careful in relinquishing control of how their work will appear.

If they are responsible for the content as well, while they may need to broaden their skill set, they will enjoy having the advantage of full control of the finished product.

From 99designs.com

Web design is what creates the overall look and feel when you’re using a website. It’s the process of planning and building the elements of your website, from structure and layout to images, colors, fonts, and graphics.

Web design has numerous components that work together to create the finished experience of a website, including graphic design, user experience design, interface design, search engine optimization (SEO) and content creation.

These elements determine how a website looks, feels and works on various devices. Check out this in-depth guide on building a website, if you want to learn more about the whole process.

Web design is different from web development, which is the actual coding that makes a website work. When you’re building a website, you need both web design and web development.

Although you can find web designers who are also web and UX developers, these are distinct skill sets.

Who is Web Designer?

From Technojobs.co.uk

A web designer is an IT professional who is responsible for designing the layout, visual appearance and the usability of a website.

A good web designer needs to have both creative graphics skills and technical skills. They need to be able to visualize how a site will look (the graphical design of the site) and how it will function (conversion of a design into a working website).

Web Designer Depot

For the best part of a decade, WebdesignerDepot has been at the heart of the web design industry. Founded way back in 2008—an eon in web terms—we’ve witnessed a revolutionary change in the last few years:

We saw the coining of responsive web design and its adoption as an industry standard; we watched the rise and rise of the mobile web, were there for the decline of skeuomorphism, the rise of flat design, and watched as the trend came full circle, and we saw UX evolve from a simple design idea into a fully realized discipline.

CSS Tricks

Hey sorry about the cheezy name. When I kicked this site off on July 4th, 2007, I mostly really did write about CSS. But of course, that means writing about HTML too. And then JavaScript as I began to learn that. The site is WordPress, so writing about that was sprinkled in. As my experience as a front-end developer and designer grew and my knowledge broadened, so did the site’s topics.

These days CSS-Tricks is really about building websites and all that entails, mostly from a front-end perspective. We have staff writers (see below) and loads of guest authors, so the content you find here will be as diverse as they are.
